Fiano is one of Italy’s most historic white grape varieties, with roots stretching back to Roman times. Ancient texts refer to a grape called “Vitis Apiana” – so named because bees (api in Latin) were irresistibly drawn to its naturally aromatic skins. Over centuries, that grape evolved into what we now know as Fiano.
Today, Fiano remains a proud symbol of southern Italy, particularly Campania, where volcanic soils and warm Mediterranean sunshine shape its unique character. As a family-run Italian wine importer, we spend a lot of time searching for wines with real heritage, personality and authenticity – and Fiano ticks every box.
Over the past year, we’ve been sourcing wines around Naples, tasting extensively and building relationships with small producers. That journey led us to an exceptional winery – Cantine Mediterranee – and a Fiano that genuinely impressed us. Even before officially listing it, we knew this was a partnership we wanted to build long-term.
What is Fiano wine?
Fiano is an indigenous Italian white grape best known for producing dry, aromatic wines with real depth. Unlike many light summer whites, Fiano offers both freshness and structure, making it versatile for food pairing and ageing.
While Fiano is grown in small pockets across southern Italy, its spiritual home is Campania – especially around Avellino and the hills east of Naples. The most prestigious expression is Fiano di Avellino DOCG, one of Italy’s highest classifications.
What sets Fiano apart is its complexity. Expect:
- Ripe pear and apple
- Citrus zest
- Honeyed notes
- Almond and hazelnut
- Herbal and floral aromas
- A subtle mineral edge
It’s this balance of fruit, texture and savoury depth that makes Fiano such a rewarding wine to explore.
Is Fiano dry or sweet?
Fiano is almost always dry. However, because of its aromatic nature, many people initially think it might be sweet. The nose can feel rich and floral, but on the palate it delivers freshness, structure and a clean finish.
This is one of the reasons we love it – it surprises people. You expect something soft and simple, then it opens up with layers of flavour and a slightly nutty complexity.
Why Campania is perfect for Fiano
Campania is one of Italy’s most exciting wine regions, shaped heavily by volcanic activity. Mount Vesuvius, dormant craters and ancient lava flows have created soils packed with minerals.
These soils are a big reason why Campanian whites stand out. They retain heat, drain well and add distinctive character to the wines. We’ve written in depth about this in our Italian wines by soil type guide, where volcanic terroir plays a major role.
For Fiano, this means:
- Enhanced minerality
- Greater freshness
- Long ageing potential
- A signature savoury finish
Combined with altitude, coastal breezes and Mediterranean sunshine, Campania provides the perfect environment for this grape to thrive.
How we discovered Cantine Mediterranee
We first connected with Cantine Mediterranee while actively sourcing new wines around Naples. Like all our producers, they weren’t found through a catalogue or trade fair – it started with conversations, recommendations and a shared love for authentic southern Italian wines.
They sent us samples of their Fiano, and straight away it stood out. The balance was superb. Fresh, but not sharp. Aromatic, but not overpowering. It had personality – something we always look for.
After several tastings, we arranged a visit. For us, this is non-negotiable. We don’t list wines unless we’ve seen where they come from and met the people behind them.
Visiting the vineyard
Standing among their vines, just outside Naples, everything clicked. You can see how the volcanic soil changes colour from plot to plot. The vines struggle, dig deep and produce low yields – which is exactly what you want for quality.
The team walked us through their vineyards, explaining:
- Soil composition
- Pruning methods
- Harvest timing
- Yield control
- Fermentation choices
You could tell this wasn’t mass production. Every decision was deliberate. That level of care shows up in the bottle.
The philosophy at Cantine Mediterranee
Cantine Mediterranee is driven by a simple philosophy – respect the land, respect the grape, and don’t interfere more than necessary.
Their approach focuses on:
- Sustainable vineyard practices
- Low intervention winemaking
- Preserving natural aromas
- Expressing terroir
They’re not chasing trends. No over-oaking. No heavy manipulation. Just clean, honest wine that reflects where it comes from.
This aligns perfectly with our own ethos, which you can read about on our About page. We don’t import wines just to fill gaps – every bottle has to earn its place.
What does their Fiano taste like?
Their Fiano delivers everything we love about the grape:
Nose
- White peach
- Lemon zest
- Wild flowers
- Light honey notes
Palate
- Crisp citrus
- Ripe pear
- Subtle almond
- Saline minerality
Finish
- Long
- Clean
- Gently savoury
It’s the kind of wine you can sip on its own, but it really shines with food.
Food pairing ideas
Fiano’s structure makes it incredibly versatile. We’d pair it with:
- Grilled sea bass
- Prawn linguine
- Calamari
- Roast chicken
- Buffalo mozzarella
- Lemon risotto
- Soft cheeses
It also works beautifully with southern Italian cuisine – fresh herbs, olive oil, seafood and simple tomato-based dishes.
Why we chose to work with them
We taste hundreds of wines every year. Most never make it onto our site. So why Cantine Mediterranee?
- Consistent quality
- Transparent production
- Fast communication
- Shared values
- Personal relationship
They’ve been incredibly supportive, sending samples, answering questions and welcoming us into their vineyard. That kind of relationship matters to us – it’s how we ensure long-term quality for our customers.
They’re not just a supplier. They’ve become friends.
When will Fiano be available at Donzella?
We’re currently finalising logistics and selections. As always, we take our time – we only list wines when we’re 100% confident.
Once available, our Fiano will be featured alongside our other carefully chosen Italian whites. Keep an eye on our site and mailing list for updates.
