Cantine Mediterranee Wines – Our Story & Collection

One introduction. A whole lot of good wine.

We hadn't heard of Cantine Mediterranee until a sommelier pointed Nicholas and Giovanni in their direction around 2024. Now we're bringing in at least two pallets a quarter. Somewhere along the way, we also found some very good friends.

Here's how a producer from Campania became one of the names we keep coming back to.

Not just one standout bottle. A producer whose whole range has won us over.

How it began

A sommelier's recommendation that stuck.

Sometimes you find a winery after months of looking. Sometimes somebody who knows their wines simply says, ‘You really ought to try these.’ That was us with Cantine Mediterranee.

Giovanni already had a connection with Campania, and discovering wines from that part of Italy felt particularly fitting. But it was tasting them that convinced us. From the Greco to the reds, the quality kept turning our heads.

Nicholas has now worked his way through the range. It was, admittedly, not the toughest assignment he's ever given himself. But there's a reason we keep going back: he's genuinely enjoyed every one.

The tasting that changed everything

Two wines. One very successful tasting.

Nicholas poured Cantine Mediterranee's Greco Campania IGP and Eruptio Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco at Locanda Gabriella. Both went down so well that they've been regulars in the restaurant's wine rotation ever since.

One customer was disappointed to find we'd run out. We took the hint and ordered more.

We couldn't pick a top four if we tried.

Nicholas has tasted his way through the Cantine Mediterranee range, and every bottle has given us a reason to go back. From crisp whites to proper southern Italian reds, we're proud to put our name behind the collection. Explore the wines below and find your own favourite.

The place behind some of the wines

Campania, Vesuvius and the vineyards.

Cantine Mediterranee is based in Naples, a region with centuries of wine history. The company highlights the traditions of the Vesuvian area, Sannio and Irpinia — places with their own distinctive grapes and styles.

There's something especially interesting about the vineyards around Mount Vesuvius. In parts of this area, vines grow in soils shaped by volcanic material. That's an important part of the story of Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio, and one reason we love introducing customers to it.

Not every Cantine Mediterranee bottle comes from volcanic vineyards. Their Primitivo, for example, is a Puglia IGP wine, from a different part of southern Italy.

The people matter too

Good wine. Good people. That's how we like to work.

We run Donzella as a family business, so we appreciate producers who work in much the same spirit. Nicholas and Giovanni have built a really good relationship with Valentina and the team at Cantine Mediterranee.

They're helpful, straightforward to deal with, and always there when we need them. We've not made it over to visit yet, but the relationship has already become an important part of how we choose what to bring to the UK.

A few things worth knowing

More about Cantine Mediterranee wines.

Where is Cantine Mediterranee based?

In Naples, in southern Italy's Campania region. Their wine range celebrates the different wine-growing areas of Campania, including Vesuvius, Sannio and Irpinia.

Which wines did you introduce at Locanda Gabriella?

Greco Campania IGP and Eruptio Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco. The Greco sold out in about a day, and the Lacryma Christi a few days later. Both have since become regulars in the restaurant's wine rotation.

Are all of their wines grown in volcanic soils?

No. Volcanic soils are especially relevant to wines from around Mount Vesuvius, including Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio. Other wines in the producer's range can come from different regions and landscapes, including Primitivo Puglia IGP.

Why does Donzella stock so much of their wine?

Because we really enjoy the wines, and our customers do too. Nicholas has tasted the range personally, the restaurant guests took to the wines straight away, and the relationship with Valentina and the team has been excellent.
